The low budget movies being produced at the hight of the dvd era were a great way to get into the film business. It’s how I got in hardly knowing anyone in Hollywood. They became rare exactly the time you mentioned. I work on Deadwood. I didn’t work on a low budget movie after that. Cut to now, all tv and movie productions feel like low budget.
There's still people who know how to make movies. But the studios aren't hiring. Feige shooting down anyone with talent, groovy fossils holding on until they drive their IP into the dirt, recycling the worst stories. I wonder if AI will allow film makers to learn with low budget streaming?
It's less that Feige is shooting down talent, he wants talent that cannot have a specific voice or style and will not fight for either royalties or a vision. They want endless product but not pay any talent for it. So in many ways Disney is just like Marvel and DC as awful Work For Hire corporations not unlike the big two comics.
That pipeline is so key. It's something Roger Corman understood quite well and the older I get, the more I think he may be far more responsible for some of Hollywood's success than a lot of the "recognized" greats.
I'd add that Roger Corman understood the pipeline for motion pictures, but what's been happening in this era of MBA's is an obsession in trying to replicate the other pipeline in place of the DVD tail. The Disney merch pipeline. But there's a flaw with that approach the merchandise pipeline they want to imitate isn't working as well as it used to because they're trying to sell merch to the "modern audience" that doesn't have the money to buy it in the long run like intact families would with healthy incomes. Instead they're pursing a variety of "Disney Adults" that have an ever dwindling supply of cash.
