Is that a Mike Zeck cover for the magazine? Looks great. He also did the art for the mini series in the mid / late 80’s that helped spawn the Punisher as a super popular character. The sales were off the charts.
I’d forgotten how good the Dixon / JRJR war journal was. I’m going to have to check the boxes in the closet…..
I remember reading The Punisher - who I saw as the Marvel version of Mack Bolan's EXECUTIONER - and The Punisher: War Journal. Somehow I missed Punisher: War Zone. I acknowledge Chuck Dixon as a great writer and I liked how he "killed" Frank Castle and just left "The Punisher." John Reid did the same thing. John Reid was dead, buried with the other Texas Rangers at Bryant's Pass. It was The Lone Ranger who inhabited the body of the former John Reid just as it is The Punisher who inhabits the body of the former Frank Castle. What Marvel has done with the character over the last decade is so cringeworthy and embarrassing it shocks the imagination. At one point I recall The Punisher became not only The Ghost Rider (what happened to Johnny Blaze? Who knows . . .?) but then was also the herald of Galactus (what happened to the Silver Surfer? Who knows . . . ?). So much for The House of Ideas.
I read the Carl Potts/Mike Baron stories in WAR JOURNAL and really enjoyed them. I wonder whatever happened to his sidekick, Microchip? I'm afraid to find out. I don't recall the character Shotgun. I loved reading the origin of Jigsaw. WAR JOURNAL was a great series as well.
Loved this article. Thanks! The fingers on the triggers comment was gold!
Man, I miss the days when Marvel actually made good comics.
